Sterling Speech Associates, LLC

Sterling Speech Associates, LLC is operated as a local, small, minority owned business that is led by a seasoned, licensed speech-language pathologist, Tamela (Tami) Sterling with over twenty-two years of experience providing all aspects of speech language therapy services to students in the Charter schools of the District of Columbia.

After working in various leadership roles for non-public schools and different staffing agencies as a subcontractor, Tami discovered that independent clinicians had a limited network, underserved understanding of the communities and a climate where the agencies valued themselves over clinician quality of life and their work product. In October of 2012, Tami decided to “give it a go” and independently established Sterling Speech Associates, LLC. After responding to several Request For Proposals for Speech and Language Services, in the summer of 2013, she won her inaugural contract.

In January of 2014, less than six months later, she received additional assistance for speech therapy services from another school. Using her extensive network, Tami fulfilled that request by hiring her 1st contract clinician into Sterling Speech. Holding to her original vision, Tami has created a space for highly skilled sub-contractor professionals to work in an environment where they are supported by a team-oriented agency. It all started with Tami as a sole proprietor, and has now developed into an agency with more than 17 clinicians, who deliver professional services from a variety of domains for more than fifteen scholastic programs in the District of Columbia. Over the years, her business continued to grow, exclusively on the strength of her reputation, professionalism, and the Sterling Speech ethos of “treating the whole child”.

Although Sterling Speech Associates, LLC largely consist of sub-contractors, Tami has created and fostered an environment where clinicians meet and mingle, conduct case studies, gain broader technical perspectives, share assessment materials, provide therapy ideas, and attend professional conferences. The Sterling Speech team collectively collaborate and earn necessary Continuing Education Units for professional licensure. Our subcontractor clinicians have a high degree of autonomy to manage their cases but greatly benefit from active guidance on best practices and therapy concepts. This model has created a 90% retention rate of our speech pathology clinicians and school based psychologists; and a 100% retention rate of Occupational Therapists.

Tami received her Bachelor of Art Degree in 1996 and earned her Master Degree of Communication Disorders from the University of the District of Columbia in 1999. She was born in Washington, DC and raised in Maryland. Being a native of the DMV allows her to have a solid grasp on the various DC Wards that require speech services in the District of Columbia. Building relationships are vital in meeting the specific needs of each school and Tami takes the time to cultivate relationships with each clinician as well as the schools to ensure optimum synchronization. The growth of Sterling Speech Associates, LLC is primarily due to our ability to provide consistent professionalism, and school references, all centered around an emphasis on building strong and sustained relationships.

Tami’s professional experience includes but is not limited to, managing service delivery, assessments, scheduling, monitoring/compliance, SEDS Trainer, training rising speech-language pathologists; guest lecturer at universities; and clinical supervision for students from the University of the District of Columbia and Howard University. Tami is a member of the American Speech & Hearing Association (ASHA) as well as licensed to practice in Washington, D.C. and Maryland.

Phyllis Wright
Phyllis Wright

Phyllis was drawn to work for SSA because of the impressive level of professionalism and devotion each clinician demonstrates. Witnessing, first-hand, how the clinicians are concerned with client progress and their ability to effect positive change with each student’s speech and language skills, has made Phyllis a true believer of the profession. SSA provides an opportunity to build relationships with other professionals and helps bridge the gap between the school and the community. Tami is a sincere professional and demonstrates the ability to meet the clinician’s needs as they grow and learn. Tami is also devoted and flexible with each charter school and displays the resolve to meet the schools’ individual needs. Phyllis is proud to be a major contributor to the success of SSA.
